Photovoltaic Laboratory

Welcome to the Photovoltaic Laboratory of the Institute for Energy and Mobility Research at the BFH-TI in Burgdorf! Our PV laboratory was founded in 1988 and focuses on PV system technology, mostly on grid-connected PV systems, but also on stand alone systems. The laboratory is active in education and in research and development.

Education:

During their studies in electrical engineering, our students specializing in electrical energy get a basic education in photovoltaics during the third year of their studies. If they wish, they can take a special course about PV in addition or make a diploma thesis on that subject.

Research and Development:

Since 1989 Research and Development projects on the national and international level have been carried out. The PV laboratory has many special PV installations and test equipment. There is also experience in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and lightning protection, especially (but not only) of PV systems. The results obtained are descibed in many publications.

The members of our PV laboratory can carry out services for interested institutions (e.g. consulting, measurements in the laboratory and in the field).

Owing to the good facilities and equipment (PV and general) meetings, workshops or courses about PV can be held at our school.

Book "Photovoltaics - System Design and Practice" soon available

In this textbook the possibilities and problems of direct conversion of sunlight into electricity and its supply to the public electricity network are shown by author Prof. Dr. Heinrich Häberlin.
As well  many places around the world that contain the data necessary for calculating the yield can be found in the book. For some plants from several countries also measured long-term yield data are given for many years.
The german version of this book is already a standard reference.

New record for normalised annual energy production of PV plant Jungfraujoch (3454m)

PV plant Jungfraujoch (effective peak power 1.13 kWp, 3454 m above sea level), which was erected in 1993 by the PV laboratory of the Berne School of Engineering and Information technology, has established a new record for normalised annual energy production in 2005. Despite a line interruption of one day (23.8.2005) in the valley, in 2005 1537 kWh/kWp were produced with a winter energy fraction of 48.5%. Thus the old record dating from 1997 (1504 kWh/kWp) was trespassed considerably.

Without the line interruption, in 2005 the production would have been even 1540 kWh/kWp. In the average of 1993 to 2005, PV plant Jungfraujoch has produced 1407 kWh/kWp with a winter energy fraction of 46.3%.
